The overall vibe a headboard brings to the table is just amazing. It could truly change everything. I couldn’t find one that I loved online that wouldn’t break the bank. I figured, how hard could it be making one from wood? The hardest part was finding the perfect wood. Here’s how Spencer and I made our headboard in 3 easy steps:
1. Take measurements
At the time we made the headboard, we had a much lower bed frame and I wanted the headboard to sit higher on the wall. We measured from about half way down the mattress (you don’t want to see the bottom of it face on) and then up the wall to where we’d like it to sit. Be sure to measure the ground to the top, as well, so you have measurements for the “legs.” DEF don’t forget to measure horizontally, too!!
2. Gather your materials
We went to Home Depot and honestly went in very open minded. We ended up coming across a beautiful textured wood (I can’t find it online and have no idea what it is called, it was so many years ago. But here is a beautiful wood that would look awesome!). When picking it, be sure to consider how wide you want it to go horizontally on the wall, but also be sure to measure vertically to match your measurements from step 1. We always get it cut there!
You will also need two “legs.” We went with two pieces that are 3.25′ wide so they are large enough for the weight, and however tall it was from the ground to about half way down the top board of the headboard (so that you don’t see the legs from the top). These two pieces will hold however many boards you end up having as your headboard.
3. Put it all together!
We were apartment livin’ at the time, so we just laid it out in our living room and got to work! We laid the wood down horizontally on the floor, facing away from us so the side of the headboard you’ll see daily was facing the ground. We then laid the legs vertically against the headboard, spaced evenly from the edges. Spencer drilled both legs into each piece of our headboard. Easy as that!
Things to note:
- We always got the wood cut at Home Depot prior to having our own saw.
- Pay attention to how they sell wood. I was a newbie and didn’t originally know they price it by the FOOT. That can quickly change things!
- We got felt pads to put on the legs against the wall & ground to prevent scratches/scuffing.
- Make sure to get the right size screws so it’s thick enough to go far enough into the “leg” wood and some of the headboard wood.
It was so super simple, you just need the right tools & proper measurements. That’s how we created our headboard in 3 easy steps- I can’t wait to see yours!
